Curriculum Vitae

Patrizio Rigatti was born in Siena on December 4, 1941. In 1968 he graduated from the University of Siena in Medicine with honours.
In 1971 he completed his residency in Urology at the University of Siena with a degree in Urology and in 1977 he completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Milan.
From 1983 to 1999 he was Clinical Professor of Urology at the Universities of Milan, Trieste and Siena.
In 1985 he became the Chief of Urology at Istituto Scientifico San Raffaele in Milan.
In 1999 he became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan. At the same time, he was appointed Director of the residency program of Urology at the same University.
Six of his pupils have since become Chiefs of departments of Urology of various non academic Italian institutions. In addition, two of his pupils are Professors of Urology and Associate Professor of Urology at the “Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele” in Milan.
Since 1990, his Division of Urology has been part of E.O.R.T.C.G.U. Group European Centres which is intensely involved in urological cancer research.
He is the author of more than 900 scientific publications in the subject of Urology and Andrology.
He was one of the pioneers in implantation of penile prosthesis for erectile dysfunction in Italy.
Prof. Rigatti’s primary field of interest is Urologic Oncology. The list of operations which he performs includes more than 3000 radical prostatectomies and over 1000 cystectomies.
Topics where he published more extensively include surgery for prostate cancer, bladder cancer and kidney cancer. He also published significantly in the field of surgical andrology, pharmacological and physical treatment for BPH, local hyperthermia for bladder cancer.
Since 1990, his group developed new laparoscopic techniques for adrenal tumors. The largest European experience of the field of laparoscopic cryoablation of renal tumors and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy which have become the point of reference for Urology and Surgery.
Recently, his group introduced in Italy the interstitial ultrasound-guided radiotherapy for prostate cancer, called brachytherapy, and prostatic cryoabaltion with a third generation probe in Italy.
Prof. Rigatti has always had a strong interest in Paediatric Urology and supports the research to find a solution for many children’s diseases. In fact, he has the most important European case histories about feminizing genital reconstructions in adrenogenital syndrome.
In May 1994 he was appointed member of the National Committee for evaluation of University System by the Italian Parliament. Currently, he is a consultant of the Superior Council of Health Administration. In 2004 he was designated as member of the National Observatory for Health Professions.
